THRIVE Scoops 4 Major Awards at Core77 Design Awards 2022.
ATLANTA, GA — THRIVE, a product development, and innovation strategy firm based out of Atlanta, Georgia, captured an unprecedented four major product design awards at the 2022 Core77 Design Awards. Among one of the highest recognitions an enterprise can receive for design excellence, the Core77 Design Awards annually celebrates the richness of the design profession as well as the insight and perseverance of its practitioners. Now in its eleventh year, the Awards program remains dedicated to excellence and inclusivity, offering students and professionals the opportunity to promote their best work globally across 18 distinct design disciplines.
THRIVE received a Runner-Up in the Tools & Work category and a Notable in the Commercial Equipment category for its team’s work on the Mirion AccuRad Personal Radiation Detector (PRD).
In today’s world, emergency responders must be prepared for anything. That’s why the Mirion AccuRad PRD is such an important tool. This handheld device is designed to help law enforcement, fire rescue, and other first responders search for and find illicit man-made radiological threats. The AccuRad PRD detects radioactive and nuclear sources, triggering selectable audio, visual, and/or vibration alarms. It also features “on-the-move” localization technology for directional source pinpointing, using a built-in radar screen to help responders locate trouble faster. And because it is built to be discrete, the AccuRad PRD is the perfect tool for any situation. With its dual displays and easy-to-read top screen, users can glance at the device and quickly get the information they need to keep themselves and others safe. In today’s uncertain world, the Mirion AccuRad PRD is an essential piece of equipment for any emergency responder.
“Thanks to partnering with THRIVE team, we secured a Homeland Security government contract worth more than $6 million and that’s just the beginning! Any product development is fraught with risk. THRIVE’s comprehensive approach—from research to prototyping to validation—gave us the confidence we needed to break into the defense market. For AccuRad, a new personal radiation detector, they named it, created the packaging and collateral, and designed a companion app. While we tend to focus on the engineering aspects of the product, THRIVE nailed the police officer and firefighter customer experience to make it discreet, foolproof and easy to use. THRIVE is magical to work with.”
Matthew Maddox, Vice President of Marketing
Mirion Technologies, Inc.
To create a device that would meet the needs of first responders, the THRIVE team spent hours in the field observing and shadowing them. They quickly learned that the device needed to be foolproof, discrete, and durable. Additionally, it needed to be easy to operate with little training and have large, easy-to-read displays. By keeping the user interface information minimal and using units spelled out instead of represented by cryptic symbols, the THRIVE team could create a device that meets all of the needs of first responders. The AccuRad is genuinely a life-saving innovation.
The success of the AccuRad is evident by the fact that it secured 43 new accounts in the first 12 months, including the U.S. Capitol Police, The Los Angeles Police Department, and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. It also won 50% of the $121MM contract for the Securing the Cities (STC) program, a five-year program funded through the Department of Homeland Security Domestic Nuclear Detection Office seeking to reduce the risk of a successful deployment of a radiological/nuclear terrorist weapon in U.S. cities. Further validating the success of AccuRad is that Mirion has exceeded its goal of achieving 10% market share and top-line revenues of $4.5MM annually. Working with THRIVE on this radiological device was the first time Mirion directly engaged its end-users as co-creators in the design process, which resulted in a product that met their needs and expectations.
THRIVE received a Runner-Up in the Interaction category and a Notable honor in the Strategy & Research category for its team’s work on the Mirion Design Language System (DLS).
Mirion requested THRIVE’s help unifying its existing product portfolio. Due to substantial mergers and acquisitions, the radiological device manufacturer experienced significant growth, resulting in a disparate set of 550 products, 155 applications, and eight brands with no common family look and feel.
THRIVE managed to help Mirion scale design, reduce design debt, and build brand equity through consistent interactions and a harmonized product experience. Rigorous analysis of Mirion’s portfolio revealed that despite its size and perceived complexity, all of its products and applications were based on three primary use cases: Alert, Search and Analyze. By identifying these critical use cases, THRIVE created a unified experience that spanned across all of Mirion’s products. As a result, Mirion could streamline its design process, reducing costs and increasing efficiency. In addition, the new unified experience helped to build brand equity by creating a consistent look and feel across all of Mirion’s products.
The Mirion DLS has launched internationally across the organization, providing teams with a shared understanding of the brand and how it should be manifested in all new products. In the past, independent product teams started from scratch with every new project — a practice that was costly, wasteful, and inefficient. Now, with a single source of truth, efforts are focused on creating products consistent with the Mirion brand identity. Thanks to the introduction of the Mirion DLS, team members now have a shared language for talking about the brand and a common framework for making decisions about product design.
